Your Hawaiʻi Lash Extension Guide: Before Your Appointment & Aftercare
Aloha, beauties!
Lash extensions are one of my favorite ways to give you that effortless, already-put-together feeling—from school drop-off and workdays to pau hana plans, beach weekends, and everything in between. But your prettiest, fluffiest retention is a partnership: I create a customized set that is safe for your natural lashes, and you protect that work with the right preparation and home care.
Living in Hawaiʻi adds a few extra things to think about. We have warm weather, humidity, sudden Puna rain, salty beach days, sweaty workouts, sunscreen, and plenty of outdoor living. None of that means you cannot enjoy lash extensions. It simply means consistent cleansing and gentle habits matter.
Save this guide before your appointment, then come back to the aftercare section whenever you need a refresher.
The quick version
For your best appointment and retention:
Arrive with completely clean lashes and no eye makeup.
Keep oils, heavy creams, mascara, strip-lash glue, and clusters away from your lash line.
Remove contact lenses and bring your glasses and contact case.
Reduce or skip caffeine before your appointment if it makes your eyes flutter or your body restless.
Plan enough time to relax, use the restroom first, and place your phone on silent.
Follow my first-day moisture instructions for the adhesive system used at your appointment.
After the initial dry period, cleanse your lashes every day and after heavy sweat, ocean water, or pool water.
Never pull, pick, twist, curl, or add clusters over your extensions.
Schedule fills every two to three weeks to maintain a full, balanced look.
Before your lash-extension appointment
1. Come with truly clean lashes
Please arrive with no mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, eye cream, lash serum, strip-lash adhesive, or other residue on your lashes. Clean lashes allow me to spend your appointment creating your set instead of removing layers of makeup and buildup.
Wash your lashes the night before and again the morning of your appointment with a lash-safe cleanser. Rinse thoroughly and make sure they are completely dry. Waterproof mascara and leftover lash glue can be especially difficult to remove. If I cannot safely clean the residue within your scheduled time, it may reduce the time available for application or require a removal and rescheduling.
Coming for a fill? Please do not add mascara, strip lashes, clusters, or DIY lash glue to fill in gaps. Those products can stick several natural lashes together and may make a safe fill impossible.
2. Keep oils and heavy products away from the eye area
For the 24 hours before your visit, avoid applying facial oils, cleansing balms, rich eye creams, heavy moisturizers, or oily sunscreen directly around your lash line. Product residue can create a barrier between your natural lash and the adhesive.
You can still moisturize the rest of your face—just keep the immediate eye and lash area clean. Be mindful of hair conditioner, leave-in products, and facial sunscreen dripping toward your eyes in the shower or while you sweat.
3. Skip or reduce caffeine before your appointment
Coffee, energy drinks, and pre-workout supplements can make some clients feel restless or cause their eyelids to flutter. That makes detailed lash placement harder and can keep you from fully relaxing.
If giving up your morning coffee is not realistic, choose a smaller serving, drink it earlier, or switch to decaf. The goal is simply to help your eyes stay comfortably closed and still.
4. Remove your contact lenses
Your eyes will remain closed for an extended period, so contacts can become dry or uncomfortable. Bring your lens case, solution, and glasses, then remove your contacts before we begin. Wait until the timeframe I give you after the service before reinserting them.
5. Shower and wash your hair ahead of time
Kontour Beauty's default aftercare is to avoid direct water, heavy steam, and excessive sweat for the first 24 hours unless I tell you otherwise for the adhesive and finishing system used during your visit. If you know you need to wash your hair, do a hard workout, hike, swim, or spend the day at the beach, plan those activities before your appointment or for another day.
Normal island humidity is part of life, so do not stress about the air outside. The goal is to avoid prolonged direct moisture, steamy showers, rain soaking your face, and heavy perspiration during that first window.
6. Eat, hydrate, and use the restroom first
Have a light meal or snack, drink some water, and use the restroom before your service. You will be lying down with your eyes closed, and unnecessary interruptions can take away from application time.
7. Plan enough time and arrive ready to relax
Lash artistry is detailed work and should never feel rushed. Your exact appointment length depends on the service you booked, your natural lashes, and the look we are creating. Check your booking confirmation and avoid scheduling something immediately afterward.
Please arrive on time, place your phone on silent, and arrange calls, childcare, and transportation beforehand. Phone calls are not allowed during the service because speaking, facial movement, and interruptions can affect the appointment and disturb your quiet time.
8. Tell me about eye concerns before you arrive
Please message me before your appointment if you have active redness, swelling, unusual watering, a stye, suspected pink eye, broken skin around the eyes, a recent eye procedure, or a strong allergy flare. We may need to postpone the service until the eye area is healthy.
Also tell me about previous reactions to lash adhesive, tape, gel pads, or beauty products. During the appointment, let me know immediately if you feel burning, sharp pinching, or significant discomfort. Your safety always comes before finishing a set.
9. Bring inspiration, but expect a customized set
You are welcome to bring lash inspiration photos. I will consider your desired fullness and style, then customize the length, curl, weight, and shape to your eye shape and the condition of your natural lashes. A healthy set should enhance you—not overload your natural lashes just to copy someone else's exact result.
Lash-extension aftercare
1. The first 24 hours: protect the bond
Unless I give you different instructions at your appointment, keep your lashes dry for the first 24 hours. Avoid:
Water directly on the lashes
Hot, steamy showers
Heavy sweating, strenuous workouts, and hot yoga
Saunas, steam rooms, and facial steamers
Swimming in the ocean or pool
Facials, facial massage, and eye-area treatments
Standing over boiling pots or letting cooking steam hit your face
If your lashes accidentally get misted by rain or splashed, do not rub them. Gently blot the skin around your eyes without pressing on the extensions, use a mini fan on a cool setting from a comfortable distance, and let them dry. Avoid hot blow-dryer air.
2. Clean your lashes every day after the initial dry period
Not washing lash extensions does not make them last longer. Our warm, humid lifestyle means sweat, sunscreen, skin oil, makeup, dust, and everyday debris can collect along the lash line. Daily cleansing helps keep the lash line fresh and the extensions light and fluffy.
Use this simple lash-bath routine:
Wash and dry your hands.
Dispense your recommended lash shampoo onto a clean lash-cleansing brush.
Close one eye and gently work the cleanser through the lashes and along the lash line using soft, controlled motions. Do not scrub, tug, or press hard.
Rinse thoroughly with clean, cool-to-lukewarm water or your rinse bottle. Leftover cleanser can be irritating, so rinse completely.
Gently blot the skin around the eye with a clean, lint-free towel. Do not mash the lashes into the towel.
Dry with a rechargeable mini fan on cool, held at a comfortable distance.
Once the lashes are fully dry, softly brush them into place with a clean, covered lash brush.
Cleanse at least once daily and anytime you need to remove significant sweat, saltwater, chlorine, sunscreen, makeup, or dust. Use only the cleanser and tools recommended for your extensions. Random facial soap, baby shampoo, micellar water, cleansing balm, and makeup wipes may contain ingredients or leave residue that is not compatible with your lash system.
Lifestyle Aftercare tips
Beach and pool days - After your initial dry period, you can enjoy the water—but do not let salt or chlorine sit on your lashes for the rest of the day. Rinse them with fresh water, complete a gentle lash bath when you get home, dry them with cool air, and brush them only when fully dry. Try not to rub your eyes with a beach towel or push wet sunglasses against your lash line. If you wear goggles, make sure they do not press or drag on the extensions.
Workouts, hiking, and hot days - After a sweaty workout, hike, yardwork session, or long day outside, cleanse your lash line as soon as practical. Blot sweat around the eyes instead of wiping across the lashes. A clean headband or visor can also help keep sweat and sunscreen from running toward your eyes.
Sunscreen, skincare, and makeup - Sun protection is still important. Wash your hands after applying sunscreen, keep rich or oily formulas away from the lash attachment area, and wear sunglasses or a hat outdoors. Apply eye creams around the orbital bone rather than directly at the lash roots.
Skip mascara—especially on Hybrid and Volume sets. Avoid waterproof eyeliner, waterproof eye makeup, strip lashes, clusters, lash glue, and mechanical or heated lash curlers. If you wear eye makeup, choose a product confirmed to be compatible with extensions and remove it completely every night without rubbing.
Sudden rain, vog, wind, and dust - A covered lash brush and mini fan are perfect additions to your everyday bag. Sunglasses can help shield your eyes on windy or dusty days. When you get home, cleanse away anything that may have settled around the lash line.
Grills, ovens, bonfires, and extreme heat - Normal warm weather is fine, but direct blasts of high heat can affect synthetic lash fibers and their curl. Step back when opening a hot oven, leaning over a grill, tending an imu, or sitting close to a bonfire. Never test the heat with your face.
Sleep without crushing your lashes - Try not to sleep face-down or press one eye into your pillow. A silk pillowcase provides a smoother sleep surface and may reduce friction compared with a rough fabric. If you prefer a sleep mask, use a true 3D contoured mask with eye cups deep enough that the fabric does not touch your lashes. A flat mask can press, bend, or tangle the extensions.
Be gentle—no picking, pulling, or twisting - If one extension turns, grows out, or feels bothersome, do not pull it off. Pulling an extension can remove or damage the natural lash attached to it. Message me or allow me to remove and replace it safely at your fill. Professional removal is always better than DIY oil, glue remover, or picking.
Keep up with your fills - Your natural lashes grow and shed on their own cycle, so some extension loss is normal. Schedule fills every two to three weeks to replace naturally shed extensions, remove outgrown lashes, and restore balance and fullness. Come to fill appointments with the same clean-lash preparation as a full set. If you notice unusual or rapid shedding, send me clear photos and a description of what you noticed as soon as possible. Please do not cover gaps with mascara, strip lashes, or clusters before I assess them.
When irritation is more than normal - Do not ignore eye pain, increasing redness, significant itching, swollen eyelids, discharge, light sensitivity, or any change in vision. Contact an appropriate medical professional promptly. If you have trouble seeing, severe pain, or rapidly worsening swelling, seek urgent medical care. Do not try to diagnose or treat an eye reaction with beauty products, and do not pull the extensions off yourself.

Lash-extension aftercare FAQ
Can I shower with lash extensions?
Yes—after the first-day dry period I give you. Avoid blasting the lashes directly with high-pressure water or very hot steam. Cleanse, rinse, dry, and brush them separately after your shower if needed.
Can I swim in the ocean or pool?
Yes, after the initial dry period. Rinse away salt and chlorine with fresh water, complete a gentle lash bath, and dry the lashes soon afterward.
How often should I wash my lashes?
At least once every day, plus after heavy sweating, swimming, or product exposure. Clean lashes are part of healthy, fluffy-looking retention.
Can I wear mascara?
Please skip mascara, especially with Hybrid or Volume lashes. Mascara can close the fans, create buildup, and make a clean fill difficult. Never use waterproof mascara or add strip lashes or clusters over your extensions.
Can I sleep in an eye mask?
Only if it is a properly fitted 3D contoured mask and your lashes do not touch the inside. Avoid flat masks that rest directly on the lash line.
What if I lose a few lashes?
Natural shedding is expected. Brush and cleanse as directed, then maintain your regular two-to-three-week fill schedule. Do not glue clusters into the gaps.
